Smart Off-Grid: Illumient Solar and Wind Streetlights Installed at New Bayside Toronto Complex

Clear Blue Technologies and TowerLabs Partner to Accelerate Adoption of Solar and Wind Technology

Toronto, ON –July 23, 2013 - Clear Blue Technologies, the smart off-grid company, and TowerLabs @MaRS, a not-for-profit green building accelerator, announced a demonstration installation on Toronto’s waterfront to promote the use of environmentally friendly solar and wind powered lighting. Tower Labs facilitated the installation of two Illumient off-grid solar and wind powered streetlights at the Bayside Toronto condominium sales centre, which is now under construction. Bayside Toronto, developed by Hines and Tridel, is the largest private sector development to date as part of Waterfront Toronto’s mandate to revitalize the city’s lakefront areas.

“We’re thrilled that Hines and Tridel are incorporating this innovative demonstration project in their Bayside Toronto sales centre,” said John Campbell, President and CEO of Waterfront Toronto. “Testing solar and wind powered street lamps on the waterfront supports our mandate to encourage market transformation and position the city as a world leader in creating sustainable communities.”

Clear Blue combines the latest advancements in green energy with a unique capability to control, monitor and manage solar and wind-powered lighting and security systems over the Internet. Its Illumient division integrates the controller into a fully engineered lighting solution with built-in communications to Clear Blue’s Horizon cloud-based management service. Illumient’s smart off-grid lighting eliminates the cost of bringing electrical power to light poles along with monthly utility bills, and the remote management service slashes the cost of maintenance and troubleshooting.

As part of the partnership, TowerLabs will independently monitor and validate Clear Blue’s integrated lighting system and issue a comprehensive report on the technology.

“TowerLabs’ mission is to facilitate the adoption of green building products, technologies and practices,” said Jamie James, President of TowerLabs. “This includes not just what goes into a building but also the broader property attributes that support sustainability. Incorporating Illumient renewable energy lighting combines practical, aesthetic, and environmental benefits, while sending a highly visible message about the intent of the development. Aqualina, in this case, is the first LEED-Platinum residential project of both Hines and Tridel – a commitment that starts with the opening of the sales environment.”

Clear Blue’s COO Miriam Tuerk commented “We are already getting great value from TowerLabs’ expertise in green building technologies and their ability to connect us to other companies in the green tech space. The installation of our off-grid street lamps at the Aqualina complex is a perfect example. We look forward to TowerLabs’ testing of our technology and reading the report they will publish.”

Aqualina at Bayside Toronto is the first residential phase in Hines and Tridel’s $1.1 billion, 13-acre mixed-use neighbourhood development located at the eastern end of Queens Quay in the new East Bayfront community.   The pilot installation can be viewed on the south side of the intersection of Queen’s Quay East and Small Street.
